Rajahmundry is one of the oldest city in our state. So many great kings ruled this city .And also the develope the city. Many people believe that  the king "raja raja narendrudu"  was built the city & devlope the city. And named the city as "rajamahendravaram" .Now it becomes rajahmundry.the great poet "nannayya" belongs to this city.Both the king raja narendra & the great poet nannayya belongs to same period. Nannayya is called as "andhrula aadikavi". He translate andhra maha bhaghavatam from sanskrit to telugu.                                          


The great freedom fighters andhra kesari sri tangturi prakasam  pantulu, and thesome great persons sri chilakamarthi lakshmi narasimham, sri sripada krishna murthy, sri pada subrahmanya sasthri, jayanthi sharma ,dr.rajarao and some other great persons are belongs to our city. 

Now we know about sri kandukuri veeresalingam panthulu. He starts schools, colleges for poor children.
He works for women's freedom and starts hithakarini samajam.Still it workin as well as his schools & colleges also.His house in vegetable market. Now it is called as town hall.                               
Sri Kandukuri Viresalingam Pantulugaru was born in 1848 in Rajamahendravaram (Rajahmundry). He was a scholar and a versatile genius. His command over Telugu, English, and Sanskrit were extraordinary and there is no one parallel to him in this. Sri Viresalingam worked as a Telugu pandit (lecturer) in the Rajahmundry college. He concentrated all his efforts and enerrgies on the social reforms viz. widow marriages and abolition of child marriages. He was a strong advocate of women education which was forbidden those days.  
 In 1928 sri rallabandi subbarao starts the museum which is the collection of old things & coins & some another valuble things are there.Now it under govt control.

in 1879 sri nalam krishna rao sasthri starts the gouthami library. It has so many no.of books, articles & some precious collections. It is one of the world greatest library.
  

In 1846-54 one resorviour  is built  on river          Sir Arthur Cotton 
godavari by the help of sir arthur cotton
With the help of this resorviour 11lakh acres 
of land get benefit. Now it constructed as a barrage. 

CENTRAL JAIL:
This is  one of the place to visit in rajahmundry. It is one of the important jail in our state.This is a fort in the time of dutch.  
This was the fort constructed(Spread in an area of 35.02 Acre's) by the Dutch when they came here for their trade. This Fort was converted into Jail during the British Rule. It was given the status of Central Jail in 1847.
1991 reports says that  there were 584 life prisoners, 581 long duration and 355 short duration prisoners in this Jail. 
 
   
  The greatness and celebrity of  Rajahmundry as the seat of learning and culture and center of religious and political activities, the meeting place of scholars, poets, learned men, dancers and musicians, that commenced in the days of Vijayaditya Ammaraja--II and his half-brother prince Danamava, reached its zenith in the reign of Rajaraja Narendra and continued till the days of the fall of the Reddy dynasty in the middle of the Fifteenth Century, survives to this day though in a lesser degree. Rajahmundry or Rajamahendravaram as it was called in those days as though all these maintained its high reputation and glory as the seat of Andhra learning and  culture.
